Roman Numeral Converter

The Roman Numeral Converter works both ways: turn any whole number from 1 to 3999 into proper Roman numerals, or decode a Roman numeral back into a number. It validates notation so only correctly formed numerals are accepted.

Numbers to Roman numerals and back

Roman numerals combine the symbols I, V, X, L, C, D and M using additive and subtractive rules (for example IV = 4 and IX = 9). This converter applies those rules to translate numbers from 1 to 3999 into standard Roman form, and decodes numerals back to ordinary numbers.

It checks that any numeral you enter is correctly formed — so MMXXVI is accepted as 2026, while malformed input is rejected rather than silently miscounted.

Common uses

  • Years, clock faces and book chapters
  • Movie sequels and event editions (Super Bowl LVIII)
  • Decoding numerals on monuments and copyrights
