How GPA is calculated

GPA, or Grade Point Average, converts letter grades into a single number on a scale that usually tops out at 4.0. Each letter grade maps to a point value — A is 4.0, B is 3.0, and so on, with pluses and minuses adding or subtracting a third of a point. The calculator multiplies each course's grade points by its credit hours to get quality points, sums those across all courses, and divides by the total credit hours.

The credit-hour weighting is the crucial part. A five-credit course counts more toward your GPA than a one-credit course with the same grade, because it represents more of your academic work. This is why an A in a small elective cannot fully offset a lower grade in a heavy core course, and why the simple average of your letter grades is not the same as your true GPA.
